Hi, I'm Sam and this will be my new journal. but for now here's a few facts about eels: Electric Eels Aren't True Eels – Despite their name, electric eels (Electrophorus electricus) are actually a type of knifefish, not true eels. They can generate up to 600 volts of electricity to stun prey and defend themselves. Eels Have a Mysterious Life Cycle – Many eels, like the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), migrate thousands of kilometers to spawn in the Sargasso Sea. However, no one has ever seen adult eels spawning in the wild!
Some Eels Can Breathe Through Their Skin – Moray eels have small gill openings, so they rely on opening and closing their mouths to move water over their gills. Some eels can also absorb oxygen through their skin, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen environments. Eels Start Life as Transparent Larvae – Eel larvae, called leptocephali, are completely transparent and drift in the ocean for months to years before developing into juvenile "glass eels" and later into adults. Some Eels Can Travel on Land – The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) and other freshwater eels can slither across wet ground for short distances to find new water sources, using their skin to absorb oxygen.
